The Harvard Cooperative Society, known as the COOP, has served Harvard and MIT communities since 1882. Before working with Bevy, it ran its ecommerce and point-of-sale on NetSuite, with a SuiteCommerce storefront. The stack was old, poorly documented, and hard to change, with no real marketing behind it. The COOP moved to Shopify to pull everything into one place and grow.
Since partnering with Bevy, the COOP has achieved:
- 45% increase in total site users within a single quarter, from 83,644 to 121,692
- New site users rose 51% in the same quarter, from 78,954 to 118,967
- $40,489 in revenue from digital marketing, a channel that earned nothing before
- Email marketing grew to 14% of overall revenue, up from 5% before Bevy took over
- One source of truth for sales across all channels, online and in person
The Challenge: Too Many Disconnected Tools, Too Much Done by Hand
An Outdated, Undocumented Stack
The COOP ran on NetSuite with no internal documentation, and nobody really owned it. Reporting barely worked, and the templates were too locked down for the marketing team to touch.
A Dated Storefront
The SuiteCommerce site had gotten old, and it showed. Shoppers were landing on a store that felt behind the times.
Too Much Manual Work
The warehouse and fulfillment ran on manual steps that lived in just a few people's heads, right down to generating purchase orders. Adding products in NetSuite was slow and easy to get wrong. Even setting a discount meant hand-coding it.
Scattered Membership Data
Membership records were spread across different people and tools, then keyed into NetSuite by hand. Mistakes were bound to happen, and they did.
A Disconnected Email Program
Email was an afterthought. It ran on its own, with no automation and no link to a CRM. So there was no simple way to bring a customer back after they left something in their cart, or to notify shoppers about new drops.
Untracked Pop-Up Sales
The COOP sets up pop-up shops at campus events, but it never tracked sales consistently. A lot of that revenue went unrecorded.
A Gap in the Retail Footprint
The COOP sold directly through its online store and sat alongside the Barnes & Noble campus shops, but it had no physical store of its own to add to the mix.
The Solution: Shopify at the Core, Everything Else Built Around It
One Platform, Fully Documented
We moved the online store and point of sale off NetSuite, bringing two years of history along. Shopify now runs the show, with Rillet (ERP) and Avalara (tax) plugged in. We worked closely with Barnes & Noble College and RSM's technical teams to document and map two years of legacy data that had never been documented.
Custom Theme, Matched to Their Brand
We swapped the rigid SuiteCommerce templates for a custom Shopify build. Now the COOP has a flexible theme they can style their own way and keep iterating on, without waiting on a developer.
Reporting the Team Can Use
The same build also gives the marketing team Shopify's built-in analytics, so they can track what is working and make decisions from real data. On top of that, we're building the COOP a custom dashboard that brings real-time revenue, traffic, and email marketing performance into one view.
Discounts Without Coding
We built a self-service discount tool right into the product customizer, adjustable from 0 to 100% off. Setting up a sale is now a quick change, not a coding job.
Membership in One Place
We made Shopify the home for membership and built a custom flow to fix the Klaviyo sync that kept dropping data. We also found where the process kept slipping so the COOP could put someone in charge.
Email Lifecycle, Built in Phases
We integrated Klaviyo with Shopify as the CRM or ecommerce backbone, then built an email lifecycle program in two phases.
Phase 1: Cleaned up the data and launched renewal and win-back campaigns.
Phase 2: Layered in automated lifecycle flows and a 12-month engagement plan.
Along the way, we designed and A/B tested the renewal emails with the COOP's marketing team before they went out. Beyond the build, we handle COOP's day-to-day email marketing. When a new drop or sale is coming up, we design the campaign, time it well, and track open rates and purchases.
Fulfillment Off Manual Work
We led the switch to SkuLabs for the warehouse. It now takes care of inventory and fulfillment, generates the purchase orders, and manages the dropship SKUs, all the work that used to be done by hand in NetSuite.
Every Pop-Up Sale, Captured
The pop-up shops at campus events now ring up through Shopify POS. Every sale gets recorded like a normal in-store purchase, so none of it goes missing anymore.
A New Channel, Same System
We helped the COOP open its own physical store in Allston. It runs on the same Shopify POS as the rest of the business, widening the COOP's retail footprint while keeping sales in one system with every other channel.
Technical SEO Overhaul
After launch, we cleaned up the site structure and added schema markup to the old blog posts so search and answer engines can index them properly and show them in search results. We also improved the site's performance, bringing the COOP's mobile page speed to 98%.
The Result: Unified Business and a New Growth Channel
Since the move to Shopify, the COOP has a marketing channel it never had before, and the spend is already paying off. Email now makes up 14% of overall revenue, up from 5% since the beginning of 2026. The money put into ads is working hard too. For Q4 2026, digital marketing returned $6.20, and email marketing ROAS was $4.21.
Traffic improved in the same quarter. Total users grew to 121,692 from 83,644, and new users grew to 118,967 from 78,954. The audience is more engaged too. Events per session from email rose to 13.2 from 7.38, a 78.94% increase. Average time per session climbed to 1 minute 22 seconds from 51 seconds, a 59.84% increase. People who come in from our emails do more on the site and stay longer.
Behind the numbers, the bigger win is that the COOP can finally see its whole business in one place. Online and in-person sales land in the same system, and the team has its own dashboard to track what is working.
"Working with the Bevy team has been a great experience and a true partnership. They helped us connect our existing NetSuite platform to our new Shopify eCommerce site within a very short timeframe, allowing us to keep the business moving through a significant systems transition.
As our needs evolved, they went beyond the initial scope of the project and helped us identify a new inventory management platform that integrated with Shopify, ultimately allowing us to fully transition away from NetSuite. They also served as our development team, building custom pages and functionality within Shopify to support our business's specific needs.
The biggest impact has been having a team that understands both our business and our technology needs. They have been incredibly responsive, troubleshooting technical issues as they arise and providing ongoing day-to-day support to our internal team. Their partnership has allowed us to modernize our systems, improve how our platforms work together, and build a stronger foundation for our eCommerce and operational growth."
